Professional tax in Meghalaya: the gap we have not closed

Meghalaya levies professional tax, but we have not been able to read a rate schedule we would publish. We show the gap rather than a guess.

What is worth knowing about Meghalaya

The 2022 amendment replaced s.4 with 'the tax shall be levied at the rates as may be notified by the State Government', moving the rates out of the Act — and we could not locate the notification. The two candidate schedules differ by an order of magnitude at the bottom, so we will not guess. This is the one state where we still show a gap.

Gap

The 2022 amendment moved the rates out of the Act and into a notification we could not locate, and the two candidate schedules differ by an order of magnitude at the bottom — so we show a gap rather than a guess. So we publish no rate for this state at all, and the calculator returns a gap rather than a number.

Confidence: low

Secondary sources only, and either they conflict with the bare Act or no official schedule could be located. Encoded because a documented best reading beats a blank, but flagged here and on the methodology page.

The cap every state is under

Article 276(2), Constitution of India limits professional tax to ₹2,500 a person a year, whatever a state’s own schedule says. Several states are written to land exactly on it — that is why Karnataka and Maharashtra charge a different amount in one month of the year, and why an annual total on this page never exceeds ₹2,500.

Where this comes from

Statute: Meghalaya Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Taxation Act (Assam Act VI of 1947 as adapted), amended by Meghalaya Act 15 of 2022

Your actual take-home

The gap above is a gap in one line of a payslip, and the lines around it are the larger ones. Our CTC to in-hand calculator, opened on Meghalaya, carries the gap through rather than papering over it: income tax under the Income-tax Act 2025, EPF and gratuity are all computed in full with the working shown, and the professional-tax line is set to zero with a warning saying so rather than quietly guessed. Put your own CTC in it and read what we do know.

What we cannot tell you about Meghalaya is one deduction, capped by Article 276(2), Constitution of India at ₹2,500 a year. What we can tell you is the choice worth many times that: which tax regime costs you less. Compare both on Meghalaya figures — it works out each one and says which pays less tax on the numbers you enter, and nothing beyond that.
